Pokemon Versione Rossa  and Pokémon Blue Version  are the first two video games in the Pokémon role-playing game series, developed by Game Freak under the direction of Satoshi Tajiri . Published by Nintendo for the Game Boy handheld console , the two titles originally appeared on February 27, 1996 in Japan under the name Pocket Monsters Aka (ポケットモンスター 赤Poketto Monsutā Aka ^?, lit.

 “Pocket Monsters: Red”) and Pocket Monsters Midori (ポケットモンスター 緑 Poketto Monsutā Midori ^? , lit. “Pocket Monsters: Green”) ^[4] ; an improved special edition, titled Pocket Monsters Ao (ポケットモンスター 青 Poketto Monsutā Ao ^?, lit. “Pocket Monsters: Blue”) , was released on the following October 15 [ ^5] . 

The Pokemon Versione Rossa video games were exported to the West with the title Pokémon Red and Blue , in a version based on the Japanese Ao but maintaining the same characteristics as the Aka and Midori gamesoriginating. They were published in North America ^[6] and Australia ^[7] [8] in 1998 and in Europe in 1999 ^[9] [10] .

In the video games , the player controls the main character ‘s movements through the fictional Kanto region , catching creatures called Pokémon to train and use in battles against other trainers . 

The object of the game Pokemon Versione Rossa is to become the champion of the Pokémon League by defeating the eight gym leaders and the four strongest trainers in the region: the Elite Four . Another goal is to complete the Pokédex, the fictional encyclopedia present within the games, capturing all 150 species of Pokémon available. The two titles are independent of each other, but share the same story. While they can be played separately,

Pokemon Versione Rossa must be traded between the two versions to complete the Pokédex, as each version features Pokémon absent from the other, and vice versa. The 151st Pokémon, Mew , is only available via an in-game glitch or an official Nintendo distribution.

Pokemon Versione Rossa enjoyed great popularity in Japan and Western countries and started the multimillion-dollar Pokémon media franchise , second only to the Mario series ^[11] . IGN called them the best-selling Game Boy role-playing games (RPGs) ever and the best-selling RPGs of all time ^[12] . The original video games were reissued in 1998 in Pokémon Yellow , a special edition that incorporates elements of the television series , and in 2004 in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen , color remakes forGame Boy Advance of the two titles with numerous updates.
